We’re all very aware of the health risks of smoking, not to mention the cost, and whilst it’s always more preferable to stop completely, a recently developed and increasingly popular version of middle ground is making huge waves.

I am of course talking about e-cigarettes.

You can’t have failed to notice this growing trend, but if you’re not sure what I’m talking about, basically e-cigarettes are a form of smoking, without actually, well, smoking. Whether these are more socially acceptable is up for debate but there are currently no laws to stop the use of e-cigarettes in public places, as there are with mainstream smoking, albeit a few guidelines in certain places.

E-cigarettes, also known as ‘vaping’, is a way of replacing traditional cigarettes. Not thought to be as harmful as cigarettes, the 21st century smoke  e-cig is a battery powered device which is filled with liquid nicotine. We all know that the crux of smoking is a nicotine addiction, but in this form the nicotine is dissolved into a solution containing water and other ingredients, and when the user takes a puff, the liquid is heated up by the battery inside the device, creating the famous vapour that is inhaled. Basically you’re smoking, but you’re not really.

There are countless types of e-cigarettes on the market, with many different flavours, and e-cigarette refills are easily found on the High Street nowadays. Vapourlites and Gamucci are two popular online companies offering a variety of related products, such as the vapin plus liquid vaporizer pen, for those wishing to switch to vaping, rather than traditional methods.

Studies have shown that the use of e-cigarettes could help users quit smoking altogether over time, offering a bit of middle-ground between full-blown smoking and stopping, causing an alleviation in the desire to actually smoke, as well as a decrease in the amount smoked, without causing withdrawal symptoms; obviously the part of quitting which is the hardest to deal with is the withdrawal symptoms themselves, so if they’re not there, it’s easier.

Whether or not vaping is cheaper obviously depends on how much you use, but with the rising cost of a packet of cigarettes, and if you smoke a considerable amount, you could find that you save money by switching to this increasingly popular trend.

Put simply, smoking is an addiction that is preferable to stop, but if you can find a way to make it a little healthier, safer, cheaper, and maybe even give you a window to kick the habit completely, then e-cigarettes could offer a chink of hope.
